The U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad (USNCO) program is a chemistry competition for high school students. The purpose of the competition is to stimulate young people to achieve excellence in chemistry. The American Chemical Society has sponsored the program since 1984.
The Olympiad begins at your high school, with your science teacher nominating you for the Local Chemistry Olympiad Challenge. This challenge is sponsored by the ACS Binghamton Local Section and typically consists of a written exam and a laboratory, both of which you complete independently. Top performers are invited to the National Chemistry Olympiad Exam, which involves three parts, again completed independently. The 20 top-scoring students, nationally, are chosen to attend a two-week study camp designed to train the attendees for the International Chemistry Olympiad. At the end of the study camp, four students are chosen to represent the U.S at the International Chemistry Olympiad.
