RESEARCH INTERESTS

Research interests are in organometallic photochemistry with an emphasis on transition-metal photophysics and photoreactivity. We really seek to learn more about the nature and reactivity of electronically excited states and then apply this knowledge to a variety of new directions and applications.

Recently, we have been studying photochemically-induced C-H bond activation reactions, photoinitiator and photocatalytic processes in thin film materials, and organometallic complexes as spectroscopic probe species in polymers, including thin films. Studies (funded by the Department of Energy) have included measuring the first available quantitiative photochemical data for a number of significant intermolecular Si-H and C-H bond activation processes, determinining the photochemistry of metal cluster complexes that present new avenues for activation and catalysis, photochemical investigations of the distinct singlet and triplet reactivities of metal complexes, characterization of luminescent metal carbonyls in room-temperature and low-temperature glassy solutions and in a variety of thin films (thereby revealing new spectroscopic probes), exploring the long-wavelength photochemistry of various organometallic species, investigating the wavelength-dependence photochemistry of photocatalyst and photoinitiator systems. Furthermore, we have recently extensively investigated the photophysical, electrochemical and host guest properties of numerous transition-metal molecular squares and other supramolecules.
